We’re excited to announce the launch of Greenlight, a new experiment in non-profit investigative journalism. Greenlight is a membership-supported, independent newsroom that will provide in-depth reporting on the issues that matter most to our community.
We believe that quality journalism is essential to a healthy democracy, and we’re committed to filling the gap left by the decline of traditional news outlets. Our goal is to serve the public good by producing investigative stories that shine a light on injustice and spark change.
Greenlight is supported by member donations and staffed by experienced journalists who are committed to holding the powerful accountable. We’ll be focused on investigative reporting, but we’ll also be giving voice to underrepresented communities and stories that don’t always make headlines.
We’re starting small, but we have big plans. With your help, we’ll build Greenlight into a critical resource for our community—one that makes a real difference in the world.
How We Got Here
The idea for Greenlight came about because of the growing need for quality investigative journalism and the decline of traditional news outlets. In recent years, we’ve seen an alarming trend of cuts to newsroom budgets and staff layoffs at newspapers across the country. This has led to less original reporting and more opinion pieces masquerading as news.
At the same time, we’ve seen the rise of fake news and misinformation online. With fewer people working in journalism, there’s less capacity to fact-check stories and hold those in power accountable. As a result, it’s becoming harder and harder for readers to know what to believe.
